Background

In an era defined by global challenges—from the energy transition and climate change to the demand for sustainable materials—applied chemistry stands at the forefront as the science of practical solutions. Breakthroughs such as green catalysts, next-generation batteries, and biodegradable polymers are not only economic drivers but also foundational to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Sustaining this progress, however, requires a new generation of talent capable of bridging core chemical theory with real-world applications across laboratories, industries, and communities. The International Applied Chemistry Olympiad (IAChO) emerges as a direct response to that need: a worldwide competition that empowers students to showcase creativity, analytical rigor, and innovative courage through application-oriented chemical problems.

Objectives

IAChO is designed to cultivate young chemists who are both conceptually proficient and keenly aware of real-world problems and scientific ethics. Through a combination of theory exams and research-based practical tasks, the Olympiad seeks to:
  1. Sharpen applied problem-solving skills by challenging participants to devise chemical solutions for clean energy, healthcare, food security, and environmental stewardship.
  2. Foster cross-cultural collaboration by connecting students from every continent in an environment that is simultaneously competitive and cooperative, laying the groundwork for an early global scientific network.
  3. Advance research literacy by introducing cutting-edge experimental techniques, data analysis methods, and scientific communication aligned with international publication standards.
  4. Instill principles of sustainability and social responsibility by emphasizing that chemical innovation must prioritize safety, ethics, and the collective well-being of humanity.

Through these objectives, IAChO aims to catalyze ideas and collaborations that transform today’s chemical challenges into opportunities for shared advancement.
